The Giver

The Giver Educator’s Resource, was carefully created to bolster adolescents’ academic and social skills. The lab aimed to promote content comprehension, critical thinking, empathy and self-awareness. The Giver story is rich with themes of social and civic dilemmas that challenge students’ sense of ethics and social responsibility. The book version is typically taught in Grades 5–7.

In order to analyze the effectiveness of the educational rescource, the X-media lab selected sixth-grade language arts classes from different regions of the United States (West, New England, Coastal South). Each class participated in the program, and used our educational rescources to learn about educational, ethical, and aesthetic awareness.  The lab then analyzed the effectiveness of the program by conducting interviews with middle school language arts teachers.

The report linked below specifically examines findings from The Giver Project, a research effort where sixth grade teachers implemented a curriculum that was created for The Giver book by Lois Lowry and its film adaptation by The Weinstein Company and Walden Media. The findings from this report are exploratory, but can provide valuable insight that will allow educators, families, curriculum designers, and researchers to strengthen their understanding of how books and films can be leveraged to amplify learning experiences for youth.
