New Cross Media Professional Development Workshop

Teaching with Primary Sources and Humanizing Stories Told Across Media

July 26-August 22, 2023

Overview:  This 4-week, online, asynchronous workshop is funded by a 2023 TPS Eastern Region grant from the Library of Congress to introduce the latest cross-media methods that integrate the strategic use of primary sources to deepen student learning and engagement. We'll cover techniques and best practices for choosing stories, searching for primary sources, and adapting the new methodology  to different disciplines and grade levels. Learn more about the cross-media approach here .

Who Should Attend: Educators at all levels of experience are invited to apply for a scholarship (see registration/cost details below) to participate in this online, asynchronous workshop. If you are interested in bringing stories into the classroom in dynamic ways that build digital/media literacy, cultivate new perspectives, and meet students where they are... this workshop is for you.

What to Expect:  This professional development workshop is designed to give participants an interactive, practice-focused learning experience first as a student then as a teacher, utilizing a new methodology that combines the power of storytelling with cross-media analytic methods, and the strategic use of primary sources.

The workshop begins with an introduction to foundational research, cross media analytic methods, and the theory of change for the new methodology in Week 1. The next 3 weeks build progressively from observing (See One) new methods to trying (Do One) new methods to putting into practice (Teach One) new methods with key emphasis on the straegic use of primary sources.

Each week, participants will work through the workshop content at their own pace then submit a brief reflection on their key takeaways at the end of the week. You will be challenged to read, watch, listen, analyze, and compare a variety of stories as told in different media forms. You will be encouraged to exchange ideas with peers  in guided online discussions and to consider how you might apply this new methodology to your own practice. The workshop culminates with a live online session where participants can meet with the teaching team and share their action plans.
